First impression is that the wait staff is excellent. Our waiter was professional, attentive & fun. The atmosphere is also quit nice, just off 5th Ave on 4th St, in a wood & palapa type building. The best thing about Ajua Maya is the quality & freshness of their food.

We started off with the Ceasar’s Salad which was prepared tableside from scratch. The dressing was mixed, stired & tossed as we all watched while sipping a free drink and it was absolutely delicious (I usually am not really a salad guy-but this was wonderful). The grilled shrimp dish was perfect as well as all 4 of our main courses, including grouper & a seafood pasta. For desert we shared a Banana Foster made flambau style tableside.

We ate 10 dinners during our stay in Mexico & Ajua Maya was most certainly the best restuarant we experienced in Playa del Carmen. Great food, excellent-fun service (serving drinks on head, fun tricks, etc.) & a nice atmosphere. What else could you ask for ? Oh,…. maybe live music….they had a band playing too! This is not a cheap restuarant,.. however, it is not real expensive & for the quality of food & service it is easily worth every penny! ENJOY !!!!

The Calamari is sauteed in olive oil, garlic and lemon juice and other unknown spices…it is to die for and every bite I took was amazing..really! Dont forget your bug spray if you go in July..and since there is no AC and only ceiling fans you may be a little hot at times

The restaurant lies a few steps off of 5th, just enough to provide a more relaxing dining atmosphere.

The food and service were both excellent! The waiters and management went out of their way to make us comfortable. All of the dishes our party had were good from the steaks to the pasta to the Mexican plates. If three of you want create a Mexican sampler dish, then I recommend the Mexican entree for 2 and add an extra plate of enchiladas!

In addition, we were pleasantly surprised by the house cabernet. If you enjoy wine, then you know it can be hard to find good stuff. Also, order the mayan coffee and you’ll get a great fire show!!

Finally, an added bonus was that its walking distance to Playacar.

Definitely plan on coming back next time!

We went for lunch and were the only ones there the only time. It was clean and attractively decorated. I bet it is gorgeous at night with all the twinkle lights. The service was really great. We ordered the tuna tartare with avocado, nachos, and the recommended Virginia style hot wings. All of it was delicious and the portions were generous.

5 of 5 starsThe Ajua is the best kept secret in town. Another visit with friends, great food, drinks and entertainment. Stumbled upon the Ajua ten years ago on a rainy day and have continued coming back. Set back off 5th Avenue….look for it or you will miss the best meal during your stay in Mexico!

Love the latin dancing. only wish that we could do it better. Maybe brenda and her husband can give us some lessons as they are a joy to watch on the dance floor. We have been going there for over 8 years and spend 6 months per year in playa and ajua (you need to say it loudly as it is like yippee!!) is a wonderful place.

Miguel Preparing Flambeed Lamb Chops

We found AJUA in November 2008 when a bartender at another establishment recommended it to us. My wife and I had the Chilean Sea Bass flamb’e and it was delicious! Our server/chef Miguel did an outstanding job prepairing all of our food. The table was out in front of the restaurant beside the street and the people walking by apeared to be just as impressed by the show as we were.

When we returned to Playa Del Carmen Friday May 20, 2011 we stopped in on our first night. There was a party that reserved the entire restaurant so we couldn’t be served. We were only hungry enough for appetizers on Monday so we ordered the lobster and a caesar salad. Miguel hand made the salad dressing right in front of us from 6 or 7 different ingredients, how cool is that? The lobster was prepaired in the kitchen. The food quality and taste were excellant.

Tuesday was our last night at the playa so we dined at AJUA. Unfortunatly they were out of the Sea Bass so Paula got the Shrimp flambe and I got the Lamb Chop flambe .. Once again we were impressed with our food. I’m glad that we tried something different.

I am very particular about recommending stuff to other people, it puts my reputation on the line. However I will say that this is one dining experience that you won’t want to miss. This is the restaurant that you should go to to celebrate a special occasion or treat yourself to an excellent meal.

It’s on Norte 4 so there isn’t the mob of people on 5th Ave. There is no air conditioning like most of the restaurants but we felt a slight breeze blow up from the sea.
